The U.S. Senate has designated March 13-17, 2006 as National Safe Place Week. "National Safe Place Week will help raise awareness of the number of troubled young people in the country while letting more youth and families know that help is often right in their own neighborhood," said Faye Roberson, Outreach Director for North Texas Youth Connection. National Safe Place Week will recognize the 14,000 businesses and 1,500 volunteers nationally who give their time, resources and energy to make our country a safer place for children.

Project Safe Place exemplifies a way for communities to collaborate with the private sector and youth service agencies. It provides an opportunity for many segments of the community to become involved in providing immediate safety for at-risk youth. Businesses such as fast food restaurants and convenience stores and community buildings like fire stations and libraries are designated as Safe Place locations.
Any young person in a crisis situation can walk in and ask an employee for help. The business contacts North Texas Youth Connection, and within minutes a staff member arrives and takes the young person to North Texas Youth Connection and works to provide the services the youth needs, whether that is providing a safe haven in the youth shelter, reuniting the youth with their family, or enrolling the family in the STAR Family Connection free counseling program. Safe Place puts distressed children and their families in touch with resources they need to keep safe and provide support and guidance for the family.
In Cooke, Grayson, Fannin and Denton counties, project Safe Place is operated by North Texas Youth Connection. Businesses serving as Safe Place locations include Wal Mart, QuikTrip Convenience Stores, area schools, Fire and Police Departments in Sherman, Denison and Collinsville, IKON Office Solutions, Bob Utter Ford, Lakeway United Methodist Church, and many others. They are easily identifiable by the yellow and black “Safe Place” sign hanging prominently near the door.
Forty-one states have Safe Place programs that serve over 700 communities across the country. Since1983 Safe Place has succeeded in helping over 150,000 young people stay off the street using a network of businesses and public locations and through the outreach performed. The Safe Place goal is to have the Safe Place sign recognized nationally as a symbol of help and safety for any young people who are lost or scared, abused, threatened or in any unsafe situation. If you would like to volunteer to help by having your business participate as a Safe Place site, volunteering your time or by making a financial donation, contact Roberson at (903) 893-4717.
