NTYC hosts tour in recognition of April Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month

View Opinions | Post Your Opinion

In recognition of April’s designation as National Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, North Texas Youth Connection will host an open house / tour on Thursday, April 27.

The tour will begin at noon and attendees will be back in their vehicles and on their way in less than an hour. This tour is designed as an opportunity for people in the area to become more familiar with the programs and services offered by the agency. There is no cost to attend the tour, and there will be no monetary solicitation during the tour. An RSVP is not required; anyone interested may simply meet at the facility at noon.

Child abuse is a community issue. Every citizen can help ensure a brighter future for the children of our area. There are four types of child maltreatment: physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse and emotional abuse.

· Physical abuse is a physical injury that results in subtstnatial harm to the child, or genuine threat of substantial harm from physical injurty to the child. Such injury is considered abuse regardless of whether the caretaker intended to hurt the child.
· Neglect is failure to provide for a child’s basic needs necessary to sustain th elife or health of a child, excluding failure caused primarily by financial inability unless relief services have been offered and refused.
· Sexual abuse includes fondling a child’s genitals, penetration, incest, rape, sodomy, indecent exposure, and exploitation through prostitution or producing pornographic materials.
· Emotional abuse is mental and emotional injury that results in an observable and material impairment in a child’s growth, development, or psychological functioning. It includes extreme forms of punishment such as confining a child in a dark closet, habitual scapegoating, belittling, and rejecting treatment for a child.

Child abuse prevention is stopping child abuse and neglect before it happens. The best way to prevent child abuse and neglect is to support families and provide parents with the skills and resources they need. Prevention efforts build on family strengths. Through prevention activities such as educating parents, visiting homes, and parent support groups, many families are able to find th support they need to stay together and care for their children. Prevention efforts help parents develop their parenting skills, understand the benefits of nonviolent discipline techniques, and understand and meet their child’s emotional, physical and developmental needs. Prevention programs also can help parents identify other needs they may have and offer assistance in finding additional support.

North Texas Youth Connection provides three main program areas; the first two are designed to prevent youth and families from needing the services of the third:

· Community Outreach - Coordinates the area Safe Place program, provides Responsive Attentive Peers (RAP) preventive life-skills groups to area youth organizations and schools, oversees the Youth Advocacy Council, and develops the Diversity Conference and Leadership Forum. The RAP groups are the first step in our prevention efforts, targeting young children and providing them with essential skills they need to stay safe. The Safe Place program allows youth to have a place they can go to get help.
· STAR Family Connection - A free counseling program for families of youth ages 0-17 who are running away, truant, experiencing family conflict, or exhibiting misdemeanor behaviors. The organization oversees the STAR program in Grayson, Fannin, Cooke, Hunt, Lamar, Wise, Montague, Archer, Clay and Wichita counties. The STAR program works with the family’s strengths to give them tools they can use to overcome crisis situations, and is designed to keep the children in the home. Three months after the program ends, over 90% of the families say that their situation has improved or improved greatly.
· Emergency Youth Shelter - 14-bed voluntary, temporary shelter for boys and girls ages 10-17 provides runaway, homeless and abused youth with a safe place to stay until they can be reunited with their family or an alternative living arrangement secured.

North Texas Youth Connection, formerly Grayson County Juvenile Alternatives, is located at 1602 E. Lamar St. in Sherman.
