SHERMAN, TEXAS -Austin College students will be headed to the classroom on January 18-this time not to learn, but to teach. Students participating in Jan Serve will work with students at Dillingham Intermediate School and Piner Middle School.
Jan Serve is an annual service project organized by the student-run Service Station.
Service Station Board member Naureen Dharani '13 said, "Every year we promote service in a wide variety of ways, but this year we like to promote service by educating the children of the Sherman ISD. Many of our other programs reach out to the children of Sherman ISD, but we wanted to team up specifically for Jan Serve this year. Education is like service, in that it is something that is vital and something that you are never too old to be a part of."
Austin College students will be teaching science lessons on temperature from noon to 3 p.m. Before leaving for the schools, Austin College students will hear from Al Hambrick, superintendent of Sherman ISD and a 1979 Austin College alumnus, and be given an overview of their lesson plan. Students are encouraged to ask faculty members to excuse their absence while they take the time for the service project.
Austin College is a leading national independent liberal arts college located north of Dallas in Sherman, Texas. Founded in 1849, making it the oldest institution of higher education in Texas operating under original charter and name, the college is related by covenant to the Presbyterian Church (USA). Recognized nationally for academic excellence in the areas of international education, pre-professional training, and leadership studies, Austin College is one of 40 schools profiled in Loren Pope's influential book Colleges that Change Lives.
