SHERMAN, TEXAS-Approximately 550 youth and sponsors representing 50 Presbyterian churches throughout central and eastern Texas will arrive at Austin College Friday evening for the annual Grace Presbytery Senior High Youth Connection. The high-energy weekend of worship, small groups, fellowship, music, and fun has been held at Austin College since 1980.
Theme for 2013 is "One in Many," referencing I Corinthians 12 scriptures referencing the body made of many parts. The Reverend Karl Travis, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth, will be the main speaker for the event, and music will be led by a team of youth musicians from churches throughout the presbytery.
The group will again undertake a large service project, packaging nutritious low-cost meals through Kids Against Hunger, a humanitarian food-aid organization that provides food around the world. The project is designed not only to provide a needed service but to increase awareness of the issue of hunger.
Grace Presbytery congregations have raised $15,000 to fund the SHYC service project. In three 45-minute shifts on Saturday afternoon, students and sponsors will assemble 10,000 pouches, enough for 60,000 meals.
Kids Against Hunger, begun in Minnesota, has satellite locations in Allen, Texas, and Weatherford, Texas, whose members will supply the packaging equipment for the project. The Allen Satellite, manned by Allen Kiwanis, supports Send Hope, a ministry on the Mosquito Coast of Honduras. The meals packaged at SHYC will be sent to this ministry.
Nearly 40 Austin College students who are involved with the College's ACtivators youth ministry program will assisting in the weekend, from leading small groups to helping with logistics to participating in the mission project.
Austin College is a leading national independent liberal arts college located north of Dallas in Sherman, Texas. Founded in 1849, making it the oldest institution of higher education in Texas operating under original charter and name, the college is related by covenant to the Presbyterian Church (USA). Recognized nationally for academic excellence in the areas of international education, pre-professional training, and leadership studies, Austin College is one of 40 schools profiled in Loren Pope's influential book Colleges That Change Lives.
