Austin College organist Dr. Lisa Thomas will give a lunch lecture "Native American Treasure," January 24 at The Sherman Museum, in conjunction with the museum's newest exhibit, "Tribes: Native American History and Culture."

The luncheon lecture is free. Admission to the museum exhibits is $5 per adult and $2 per student with a college ID.

In her lecture, Dr. Thomas will explore first impressions and misconceptions of Native Americans, services and ceremonies passed down through oral tradition, and the impact Native American people have made to the rest of the world. The "Tribes" exhibit consists of many Native American artifacts, including arrowheads and spearheads (known as "projectiles"), various weapons, jewelry, pottery, musical instruments, and masks.

Dr. Thomas speaks from her own knowledge. Her heritage includes Native American roots, with members of the Cherokee, Blackfoot, and Sioux tribes among her ancestors. She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance, with a related field in ethnomusicology, at the University of North Texas in May 2010. Her published dissertation, "Native American Elements in Piano Repertoire by the Indianist and Present-Day Native American Composers," is available through Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

The exhibit is on display through March 29 at the museum, located at 301 South Walnut Street in Sherman.
