On Friday evening, April 4, the Sherman Community Players will open William Gibson?s honest and touching story, THE MIRACLE WORKER, directed by SCP guest director Patti Castleberry. This absorbing and witty dramatization of a famous case history centers on the childhood education of Helen Keller, who became deaf and blind at nineteen months of age as a result of a high fever and who grew to become one of mankind?s most exemplary and beloved geniuses in the art and science of living.

The play explores the beginning of the astonishing real-life relationship of the young Helen Keller and her unlikely first teacher, Annie Sullivan, a fiery 20-year-old Irish orphan. The story of Annie?s struggle to teach Helen language, and her eventual success, is both life-affirming and uplifting. Sullivan stayed at her side until her death in 1936, and Keller became a world-famous author and humanitarian. She died in 1968. Heading the cast are 10 year-old Anna Nall as Helen and Leah Martin as Annie.

Initially written for television, it aired in 1957 and was warmly received and then rewritten for the stage, opening on Broadway in 1959. Audience response was tremendous filling the theatre for every show. The motion picture has become a classic, and subsequent television revivals continue to draw favorable audiences.

THE MIRACLE WORKER will play April 4 through 20. Evening shows are 8 p.m., and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are priced from $6 to $12. The box office telephone number is 903-892-8818. There will be a preview performance on Thursday evening, April 3 at 8 p.m. with all seats priced at $5.

SCP managing and artistic director Ron Cassady has announced there will be a special signed performance for the deaf and hearing impaired on Wednesday evening, April 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $6 and a special e-mail address has been set up for reservations for the deaf and hearing impaired only at scp-reservations@live.com. The signed performance has been underwritten by Captain George Hastings Charitable Trust.

Kudos, congratulations and LOUD applause (with hands raised and rotated in the air) for arranging the signed performance of "The Miracle Worker"! It is a rich blessing SCP insured those who are deaf/hearing impaired are radically included . . .
