Denison, TX -- A crash course on the legal basics pertaining to people 50 plus will be offered in three 90 minute sessions at Grayson County College. Richard Barron, a local elder law attorney who will teach the classes, was quoted as saying, "Legal, financial and health care options for the elderly are an absolute maze. Part of what elder law provides clients is help negotiating that maze."

The classes, scheduled from 7:00 to 8:30 pm February 15, 16 and 18, are designed to educate older persons, their families and professionals about common legal mistakes, myths and concerns related to aging. The instructor notes it is never too early to prepare for the future. "All of us want to age in place, that is to stay in our own homes and be independent," Barron said, "but the reality is some of us will need help either at home or in a care facility. It is important to know what steps to take to when additional care is necessary to insure there is no worry about paying for needed care or what happens to the well spouse financially."

Session one speaks to the 10 things senior citizens and their loved ones need to know about life care planning. The attorney will be joined by Dianna Niemann-Harris, a professional health care coordinator, for a look at how the legal needs of the elderly are impacted by health concerns or issues. This overview of life care planning will explain how to avoid costly legal mistakes and ways to insure high quality care at home or in an alternate setting.

The second session responds to the question, "What the heck is a living trust and why should I care?" A concise and understandable explanation of living trusts will be presented along with information about how a trust can benefit elderly people and help preserve assets, providing peace of mind for the future.

The final session of the course will clarify some of the myths about Medicaid and Veterans Benefits. Data on honest, legal ways to qualify for these programs will be provided. This is when participants learn things about government programs which are not revealed when calling the VA or the local Medicaid office.

This community college is assessing $10 per person or $15 for a couple fees for the course. Elder Law Boot Camp is for all seeking legal alternatives to protect assets, income, a home and a well spouse despite high health care costs. Information gathered from an elder law attorney and other experts can allow the senior and their family to face whatever situations arise with peace of mind knowing they have a plan in place.
