Friends of Hagerman invite you to join them on October 2-3 for an overnight excursion to Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. This refuge has been described as a jewel in the National Wildlife Refuge System. This is your opportunity to enjoy a private tour with the Friends of Hagerman.
The refuge is home to nearly 800 elk. Their breeding season begins in September and bulls will be competing for harems, or groups of cows, with the eerie sound of bugling ringing throughout the refuge during this time. The elk, the main focus of this tour, are grazers and will be quite visible in the open grasslands. In addition to elk, the refuge is also home to bison, longhorns, prairie dogs and a host of other wildlife, including the black-capped vireo. The elk tour is limited to the first 26 people who sign up.
As an alternative to the elk tour, a historical sites tour will be offered. The Wichita Mountains, among the oldest ranges on earth, are rich in historical lore. Spanish traders bartered with several Indian tribes there, and legends of lost mines and buried treasure persist. Comanches used the mountains a s a safe retreat from raids into Texas and Mexico, and Quanah parker called the Wichita Mountains home. Teddy Roosevelt enjoyed a wolf hunt at the refuge. The Historical Sites Tour will visit various sites on the refuge, as well as view wildlife along the route. There will be time to take in the Visitor Center featuring Dioramas, exhibits, art, and a gift shop.
We will enjoy lunch on Saturday at Medicine Park, OK, a cobblestone community where the quaint and eclectic shops offer everything from motorcycle accessories to jewelry, gifts, candles , rustic artwork and more. Buffalo Bistro located within the Winery of the Wichitas is our designated lunch venue, however, there is a nice selection of other dining opportunities from which to choose
Your tour departs Sherman at 3:00 PM on Friday, October 2 and returns back at approximately 6:00 PM on Saturday, October 3. The price of $190 includes transportation on a comfortable motorcoach, hotel
(double occupancy), light breakfast, tours, snacks and beverages enroute, and gratuities. Call Dee Lough at Travel Partners, 903-892-4666 or 800-878-2776 for your reservation.
