College Stages Drama for V-Day

SHERMAN, TEXAS-The Austin College theatre program will present a benefit performance reading of Eve Ensler's play, The Vagina Monologues, on February 13 at 7:30 p.m. as the cornerstone of campus participation in the 2013 V-Day Campaign, a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. The performance will be presented in Ida Green Theatre of Ida Green Communication Center. Tickets will be available for $10 to the general public, $5 for all students holding a valid school ID, with all proceeds benefitting Benefiting the Grayson County Crisis Center. Tickets will be on sale at the box office the night of the performance.
Subject matter is suitable to a mature audience as the play explores the humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage, and excitement of many women's experiences, including violence. Explicit language is used.
The production will be directed by Kathleen Campbell, professor of theatre.

This production is one of a number of events on campus in recognition of V-Day, including a V-Men session on February 12, designed to engage men in a dialogue about ending violence against women.
This year is the 15th anniversary of V-Day and in commemoration, organizers have launched ONE BILLION RISING, working up the statistic that 1 of 3 women will experience violence in her lifetime-which means that over 1 billion women on this planet will be impacted by violence. On February 14, V-Day organizers are inviting one billion women and those who love them to stand up to demand an end to the violence. At Austin College a ONE BILLION RISING dance party and parade will begin at noon in Wright Campus Center.
In 2012, more than 5,800 V-Day benefit events took place, produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls.
Steering committee for the Austin College V-Day events includes Kathleen Campbell, professor of theatre; Renee Countryman, associate professor of psychology; Jeremy Posadas, assistant professor of religious studies; and senior Mary Caroline Ingram of Southlake, Texas.
