SHERMAN, TEXAS-The Austin College Department of Art and Art History hosts the photography exhibit "Awakenings" by Amy Holmes George through April 12 in Ida Green Gallery of Ida Green Communication Center. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information, call 903.813.2048.
The exhibit includes samples of two bodies of work, "Awakening to a Dream" (2004-2005) and "Awakening to Motherhood" (2012). "'Awakening to a Dream' reveals nocturnal visions that once served as the catalyst for my creative endeavors," George said. "Driven by a fascination for my recurring dream experiences, this work alludes to the vulnerable state of life and the body, unwittingly establishing the foundation for my current project 'Awakening to Motherhood,' which conjures up imagery based on my role as a parent."
"Since the content of my dreams had previously motivated my photo-making process, it was a curious discovery for me to learn that the nature of my dreams shifted dramatically during pregnancy," the artist said. "One of my most common and persistent nighttime imaginings involved identity theft. Strangely, my wallet or luggage was repeatedly lost or stolen. I began to question the meaning of this nightmarish event, which became increasingly more real and unsettling as my due date(s) approached. After eventually acknowledging my fears of a life-long commitment to motherhood as well as the loss of self and personal freedom, I decided to address the reality of this trepidation in a new body of work."
George is a fine art photographer based in Dallas, Texas. During 2008, she completed a Fulbright grant for a rephotographic project titled Double Vision: A View of Florence Past & Present, which is based on the private collections of the Fratelli Alinari photo archive in Florence, Italy. Retracing the steps of the Alinari, George visited significant sites within the city of Florence, re-photographed them from the same point of view using today's digital technology, and then printed the images in platinum/palladium, paying homage to an historical photographic process commonly employed during the time of the Alinari.
A former tenured professor of photography and digital media at Stephen F. Austin State University, she also has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Baylor University and University of North Texas.
A member of the Board of the Texas Photographic Society, George has served as chair and treasurer on the South Central Regional Board of the Society for Photographic Education. Her work has been featured at the Martin Museum of Art in Texas, Soho Photo Gallery in New York City, Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in California, and the PingYao Annual International Photography Festival in China. George holds a master's of fine arts degree from Clemson University and a bachelor's of fine arts degree, cum laude, from Miami University.
In her artist's statement, George writes, "As a passionate artist and proud mother, I am continually learning to embrace the beautiful chaos of parenting with its many gifts, pondering the everyday sense of hilarity, absurdity, and emotional overwhelm. As one who always took pleasure in an immaculate household and quiet afternoons in the studio, I am now confronted with the delicate challenge of balancing time between the needs of my children and my art. I find myself responding to this life metamorphosis through intuitive, creative collaboration, appropriating my son's artwork, and seeking inspiration directly from my interactions with or observations of my children. Drawing strength from women like Julie Blackmon, Sally Mann and Loretta Lux who have investigated the complex social dynamics of childhood and/or family through the camera lens, I composite images that are autobiographical and at the same time fictional. These reality-based narratives are undoubtedly introspective. However, these concepts are also universal and exist in a familiar realm, whether considered from the perspective of a child or a parent. This project speaks frankly about a mother's journey-those daily milestones that expose both the struggles and adventures of juggling domestic responsibilities with the demands of family life."
