The Glenda P. Dawson Donate Life Registry

In 2005, Texas lawmakers called for the creation of a state registry for people to record their authorization to make an anatomical gift when they die. State Representative Glenda Dawson, herself a kidney transplant recipient, led the effort to create the registry. In 2007, after Representative Dawson's death, the Texas Legislature changed the official name of the registry to the Glenda Dawson Donate Life Texas Registry in memory of the Representative's contributions to promote organ, eye and tissue donation in Texas.
Four years ago, there were only 500,000 registered donors. In recent years, legislation has helped streamline the registration process, and additional DPS training has helped increase participation. At the end of 2013, there were almost 4.8 million registered donors, and monthly participation numbers were up dramatically from years past. Currently more than 11,000 individuals in Texas alone are awaiting organ or tissue transplants. In 2013, according to Donate Life Texas, 143 DPS registered donors saved 486 lives.
The Department of Public Safety, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and three organ and tissue recovery agencies participate in the registry. The program is funded by a $1 voluntary contribution that Texans can make when renewing their driver license or identification card or when registering their motor vehicle. Residents can register at their local DPS office when applying for or renewing a driver license or identification card, or they can enroll online at www.donatelifetexas.org.
