SHERMAN, TEXAS-Dr. Gaspar Real, professor and researcher at Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ) in central Mexico, will speak at Austin College Thursday, April 17, at 11 a.m. in Ida Green Communication Center, Room 112, presenting "Social Networks, Innovation, Tradition, and Small Businesses in Rural Mexico: An Anthropological Study." The lecture, free and open to the public, will be presented in Spanish with English translation.

Real's most recent research centers on strategies of accessing market niches for alternative rural products. Among his latest publications is a book chapter in The Paradoxes of Competition: Subcontracting, Outsourcing, and Labor Reform in Mexico.

His principal areas of research are regional development, development anthropology, agro-industrial development, rural small businesses and alternative markets, local manifestations of globalization, culture, technology and social processes, and educational anthropology (intercultural education).

Real holds a doctorate in social anthropology from the Universidad Iberoamericana and participated in a master's program exchange with the University of California, Santa Barbara.

This presentation is offered by the Austin College Center for Southwestern and Mexican Studies with support from the Mellon Foundation.

Austin College, a private national liberal arts college located north of Dallas in Sherman, Texas, has earned a reputation in academic excellence, international study, pre-professional preparation, leadership development, and hands-on, adventurous learning opportunities. One of 40 schools profiled in Loren Pope's influential book Colleges That Change Lives, Austin College boasts a welcoming community that embraces diversity and individuality, with more than 36 percent of students representing ethnic minorities. A residential student body of 1,250 students and a faculty of more than 100 allow a 12:1 student-faculty ratio and personalized attention. The College is related by covenant to the Presbyterian Church (USA) and cultivates an inclusive atmosphere that supports students' faith journeys regardless of religious tradition. Founded in 1849, the College is the oldest institution of higher education in Texas operating under original name and charter.
