SHERMAN, TEXAS-Austin College's Hispanic student group, Los Amigos, will host a Cinco de Mayo celebration on campus Sunday, May 4, from 5 to 9 p.m. in Sid Richardson Center of the Robert T. Mason Athletic-Recreation Complex. The event is free and open to the public.

The group is holding a canned food drive in conjunction with the event and president Elizabeth Gonzalez, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, encourages attendees to bring canned goods to the event or to offer a donation, all in support of Grand Central Station. She stressed, however, that donations are not required, and that members hope to see many from the local community at the event.

Entertainment for the evening will include a mariachi band, clowns, a mechanical bull, a bounce castle, and a photo booth, as well as activities such as face painting, musical chairs, crafts and coloring, bowling, duck fishing, horchata pong, extreme hopscotch, bean bag toss, ring toss, and duck fishing. Folklorico Dancers, Los Amigos, and the Austin College KangaRAAS will offer dance performances, and other performers will offer skits, songs, and dance. Free raffles and prizes will be offered as well. Each attendee will receive a free raffle ticket for prizes.

Participants are encouraged to dress for the Cinco de Mayo costume contest and to participate in the chips and salsa eating contest, as well as the Zumba contest.

A variety of free food will be available including tacos, rice and beans, tamales, horchata, agua fresca, cotton candy, popcorn, and snow cones.

Los Amigos promotes awareness of the Hispanic culture and seeks to engage with the greater Hispanic community in the area. Students of all backgrounds and ethnicities are encouraged to take part in activities of Los Amigos.

Austin College, a private national liberal arts college located north of Dallas in Sherman, Texas, has earned a reputation for excellence in academic preparation, international study, pre-professional foundations, leadership development, committed faculty, and hands-on, adventurous learning opportunities.
