DSP&R is excited to announce that the inaugural season of Shakespeare in the Grove will feature a FREE production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and four workshops FREE to the public. Performances will take place May 30, 31 and June 1, 6, 7, and 8, at 7:30pm in Pecan Grove Park West amphitheater, 3200 Canyon Creek Drive, seating is open so come early and bring a blanket and some lawn chairs. Workshops will take place June 7 and 8 in the Municipal Building, 405 N Rusk.
"A Midsummer Night's Dream" will feature twenty five local actors ranging from experienced, trained actors like Dr. Aaron Adair, playing Bottom, to first time actors like his and Director Diana Adair's five year old son Collin Adair, playing the Changeling Boy. "We met for the first time in an outdoor production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' so to do it again and have it be our oldest son's stage debut is very meaningful for us" says Dr. Adair. Another local favorite, Blake Rice, is making the first annual Shakespeare in the Grove production his farewell performance in the area before he moves this summer. "I can think of no better way to end my local career than with Shakespeare!" Says Rice. Midsummer has something for the whole family to enjoy, from magical fairies, to a traditional old English dance, and a few other surprises along the way! Parking is free, and the concession booth will be open for anyone who wishes to purchase food, sand chairs, or small souvenirs.
"Shakespeare is fun! Unfortunately there just hasn't been a lot of exposure to it in Sherman, so part of the mission of Shakespeare in the Grove is to provide a way for people who are interested, to find out more" explained Adair. There are workshops for all ages. "Act Out" is a Shakespearean acting workshop for students in third through twelfth grade; "Decoding Midsummer" is a walkthrough of the show, from characters to plot lines, with fun historical facts about the Elizabethan era, designed for all ages interested in understanding more about the play and will be great to attend before enjoying the production that evening; "Designing Shakespeare" delves into what goes into designing a Shakespearean show--from costumes to lighting--taught by actual designers; "Who Was Shakespeare" addresses the ago-old question of whether he was a man from Stratford or a pen name for a wealthy nobleman (or woman). Listen to the compelling augments and draw your own conclusions! The workshops are designed for all interested ages.
DSP&R Director Karen Tooley explained, "DSP&R and the Sherman Community Players purposely overlapped their productions to give patrons an opportunity to enjoy a full weekend of theatre and dining! Our three wonderful restaurants in Downtown Sherman--Blue Door Cafe, Fulbelli's, and Lupe's World Famous Tamales--are offering great dining specials to those attending 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' or 'Chicago'. Enjoy a great meal, enjoy a great show. And all in Sherman!"
