DELAYS EXPECTED ON US 69 BRIDGE IN DENISON DURING STUDY

Day Street will also be closed to allow for testing of future bridge efficiency designs
AUSTIN - Motorists traveling on US 69 in Denison may experience delays next Thursday, May 22. In an effort to optimize the design of future bridges, researchers from Texas A&M Transportation Institute will be conducting tests on the US 69 bridge at Day Street, causing the Texas Department of Transportation to set up a traffic control plan which will put traffic on US 69 down to one lane in each direction.

"The most important thing for the public to know is that this testing is being done for the purpose of efficient future bridge designs, which will bring the costs of bridges down," said Aaron Bloom, TxDOT Area Engineer. "The natural reaction from the public when they see the bridge closed is that something is wrong with it, but that is not the case."

TxDOT will also close Day Street, which runs underneath the US 69 bridge, on Tuesday morning, May 20 so the researchers can set up scaffolding and attach testing equipment to the bottom side of the bridge. This installation may take place all day Tuesday and into Wednesday, but no impact to US 69 traffic is anticipated on these days.

Weather permitting, the traffic control plan will go into effect at 7 a.m. on Thursday, May 22. The testing is expected to be complete, and traffic returned to normal, by the end of the day. Should it rain Thursday, the testing will be pushed back to Friday, May 23.
