TxDOT Effort Makes Child Safety Seats a Priority

Offices Statewide Gear Up to Help Save Young Lives

Paris -- The National Highway Safety Administration estimates that roughly three of every four child safety seats are not used correctly. TxDOT offices statewide now offer parental education on the installation and proper use of child passenger safety seats.

Area offices can also provide safety seat inspections by appointment, and distribute one free child passenger safety seat per child to qualified applicants. The effort will help reduce the number of children injured and killed in motor-vehicle crashes and assist low-income families in Texas.

"We have identified and trained employees statewide who can teach the public, perform seat inspections, and provide child passenger seats to those who qualify," said Tray Turner, TxDOT traffic safety specialist based in Paris. "They have had four days of intense training and are certified by the state once every two years."

After parents or caregivers are taught how to properly use child car seats they must install the seat on their own and sign a child passenger safety checklist before leaving a TxDOT office. In Northeast Texas this service is available in Paris and Sherman.

To make an appointment, or to find the hours and locations of other offices offering this service, call TxDOT Traffic Safety Operations in Paris at (903 )737-9292.

TxDOT's new interactive seat finder at TexasClickItorTicket.com can help drivers find a proper safety seats for their children. Visit the site and click on Child Safety to begin the search.
