<![CDATA[Each year, September 1 marks the beginning of a new year for hunters and anglers in Texas. That is the date when the previous year's statewide licenses expire and new licenses take effect. It also
marks the opening day of dove season in the state.

Texas residents have many options when it comes to purchasing hunting and fishing licenses. Separate licenses can be purchased for different types of hunting and fishing, or combinations thereof. Residents also have the option of purchasing the "Super-Combo"

<![CDATA[After a hot summer and a few weeks rest, the month of September finds me back to daily striper fishing on Lake Texoma. With the unusually cool days the end of last month and the cloudy and misty days from the outlying remnants of the hurricane, the fish have turned on with a fury. We are still finding alot of stripers working bait on the surface. Sometimes they are on the small side but the ferocity of their taking the bait makes for fun Burning a slab through a school of them will get you good hits and occasionally a big one will try and yank your pole out of your hands.

This past week I have been mainly using live bait. I still have the slabs ready but I have let the stripers dictate which way I go after them each day out. I'm still fishing off the main river channel, ledges and flats.related to the deeper water where the stripers have been grouped up. Most mornings you can find acres of stripers working the surface from west of Highport all the way to Washita Point and e]]>

<![CDATA[When the curtain opens on Theatricks' production of OLIVER! on September 5, the audience will see the culmination not only of six weeks of hard work by cast and crew, but also the most recent part of the ongoing dream of the people who established the Sherman Little Theater in 1926.

What started 82 years ago has become the Sherman Community Players, which has earned recognition as an exemplary community theater in Texas. Part of the reason for that designation is its children's division, Theatricks, which teaches children, adolescents and young adults the art of theater.

Theatricks, under the direction of Webster Crocker, has two arms. Club Theatricks presents three productions each year and teaches a semester of theatrical workshops. Project Theater serves as an educational resource for area teachers, as its cast and crew travel across the area presenting plays frequently based on children's fairy tales.

After two nights of hearing 80 individuals audition and one night of call-backs, Webster Crocker and his artistic team of directors, Sylvia Rivers, Vocal Instructor, Fred Freeman, Orchestra Conductor, and Amy Dean, Choreographer, have put together a talented cast of 45 adults and young people. Fifteen of them will be performing the first time for Theatricks.

OLIVER! is one of the most beloved musicals, vividly bringing to life Dickens' timeless characters with its ever-popular story of the boy who asked for more. <![CDATA[The Friends of Hagerman NWR have chosen two persons as Photographers of the Month for August, 2008. Michael and Grace Haight were reluctant to begin studying wildlife photography, but say a class on this topic changed their course of their photography forever. Pottsboro weekenders, the Haights have an album of their photos taken at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge featured on the Friends website during the month.

The Haights’ photography is done primarily from either a hunters blind or vehicle. In future, their goal is to not only capture the wildlife in the image, but to also capture some aspect of its behavior, to tell a story about the particular bird or animal.

Each month the Friends spotlight a new album of 12 photos taken at the Refuge on their website, www.friendsofhagerman.com. Interested photographers may contact the Friends through friendsofhagerman@gmail.com.

This week I will discuss what services the registry provides, and what the limitations of the list are.

Since 2004, consumers have been able to register their phone
numbers on the Texas list. This "No Call List" will be maintained by
the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC). The list prevents telephone solicitations, including text messages or images, to residential and wireless phone numbers from all telemarketers operating in Texas. Consumers may register for the list in 3 ways: online, over the phone, or through the mail. Registering online is free and convenient, and is available at any time. There is a charge of $2.25 per number to register by mail or over the phone. It may take up to six months after registration for telemarketing calls to fully stop.

<![CDATA[Sorry for the delay in posting a new report, been extremely busy as the striper fishing on Lake Texoma this past two week has been outstanding. Our Lake Texoma stripers have been making morning runs like clockwork. Although you can catch these fast moving stripers on live bait, I prefer to use slabs, 1 1/2 and 2 ounce white and chartreusse Lorens Slabs and we find large schools of stripers working the surface top water baits, "Pencil Poppers" and "Chug Bugs".

Due to the amount of boat traffic on the lake, I have been having the best luck with slabs. During this time of year we have more boats than normal. It gets shoulder to shoulder and accidents can very easily happen. When chasing these schools of Lake Texoma stripers be very cautious and courteous to your fellow fisherman. The lake water temperature is 86 degrees with a lake level of around 617 feet and dropping and the air temperature has been in the hovering around 100 degrees.

<![CDATA[The first two weekends in August, the Sherman Community Players Board of Directors will be hosting a dinner theatre production of the Neil Simon comedy LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS as a benefit for the local theatre group. This is the seventh year for the event, which in the past, has played to sold-out houses.

The format is very much like the dinner theatres in the Dallas area, which were so popular several years ago. The event will be held in the Honey McGee Playhouse located directly behind the Finley Theatre, and seating will be limited to only 94 people. Candlelit tables of four on varying levels surrounding three sides of the performance area make for a very intimate dining and theatre-going experience. A salad course is served, and then the first act of the play is presented, followed by the main course. The second act is performed next, followed by dessert, and then the final act. An attentive wait staff serves the catered meal and complimenary wine is available.

<![CDATA[Texoma Woodcarvers Guild 2008 Nativity Scene is now on display in the foyer of the Sherman Public Library. For the third year, each member of the group has contributed one carved piece to the project, which numbers seventeen figures. The pieces are carved of butternut, using an angles and planes technique, and will be on exhibit at the library through the month of July.
The project is a charitable fundraiser for the group, with proceeds to be donated this year to Home Hospice of Grayson County. The winner of the Nativity Scene will be chosen Sept. 20, at Sherman Arts Festival.
Also on display at the library are a variety of carving styles and pieces, representative of the members' work. The Annual Show and Sale for the Texoma Woodcarvers will take place Sept. 19 - 20, on the stage of the Sherman Municipal Ballroom.
The woodcarving group meets on the second and last Tuesday evening of each month except December, at 6 p.m., at the Sherman Senior Center. In addition membe]]>

<![CDATA[ Striper fishing on Lake Texoma the first part of July as started out extremely good. We are finding large schools of stripers working the surface in open water and also in the shallows early in the morning. This sure makes for easy pickings. We have been using "Pencil Poppers" and "Chug Bugs" to catch the top water stripers we have found.

I am off of Live Bait Fishing for the next few weeks. When the stripers go deep, I am using 2 ounce Lorens Slabs and the new 1.5 ounce TNT 180 from TrollingNolansTackle.com as samples and they have worked great. The fish I am targeting have moved out to the main lake areas and are just about everywhere you look for them, deep water, shallows, ledges and along the banks. For the next couple of weeks I will be strictly using topwater baits and slabs as we have been catching much better quality of fish on them compared to the live bait.

There are alot of striper guide boats and weekend anglers on the water chasing the topwater st]]>
