Do you or someone you know often feel sad, lonely, or hopeless? Do you wake up in the middle of the night and find yourself unable to go back to sleep? Have your favorite activities lost their fun? These are all symptoms of depression. More than 18 million Americans suffer from depression each year, and researchers estimate that nearly 25% of Americans will have a serious episode of depression at some time in their life. But depression is also readily treated, and more than 80% of people with depression can feel good again. The TMC Behavioral Health Center is offering free screenings on National Depression Screening Day, Thursday, October 9, 2003, from 2:00-4:00 pm. The screening will be at the Behavioral Health Center, 2601 Cornerstone Drive, in Sherman. This free, anonymous screening can serve as the first step towards getting treatment for this painful and potentially life threatening condition. Participants in the screening will complete a short questionnaire about symptoms of depression, then meet briefly with a mental health professional to discuss appropriate options. National Depression Screening Day is held annually to increase awareness about depression and encourage people who have this disease to get treatment. Nationally, more than 50,000 people have taken part in the program since it began in 1991. For more information about the screening or directions to the TMC Behavioral Health Center, please call 416-3000.
