It's Texas and it's HOT! And if I know anything about Texas weather it's going to be this way for several more months so here are some tips to keep the inside of your home cooler than the outside.
#1.You could keep your thermostat at 78 degrees, or even higher, when no one is at home, however, the problem is that not only will the air heat up but the furniture, carpet, walls, ect. will also heat up! With all this heat it will take your air conditioner much longer to bring the temperature back down to a comfortable level. The continuous operation of the unit is actually very efficient. Without all the starts and stops of a typical cycling unit, you're able to run the system at its peak efficiency.
#2. Add insulation to your attic. The sun beating down on your roof in the summer can turn your attic into an oven. In addition to insulation, make sure you have proper ventilation, such as an attic fan, we have one in our home and it really works!
#3. If you don't have a programmable American Standard Comfort Control Thermostat, you might want to consider getting one. The easy to use "smart" thermostats can be programmed with up to four different energy saving setting a day.
#4. Clean or replace your AC air filters every month, so your unit won't freeze up. You really don't want that to happen.
#5. Protect your home from unwanted thermal radiation by closing your curtains or shades against the sun's heat. The sun shining through your windows can significantly raise indoor temperatures.
So there you are 5 small tips from MARTIN'S to try to keep you cool and comfortable this summer. So put on some shorts and a tank top, grab a tall glass of cold sweet tea, and follow our advice, so you and your family can have a great Texas summer.
