On Friday evening, October 5, the Sherman Community Players will open the perennial popular comedy, “THE ODD COUPLE” by master funnyman, Neil Simon, considered to be the greatest comic playwright of our time. Of all his many comedies, THE ODD COUPLE has been hailed as his funniest, with the audience “laugh-o-meter” going off the charts.
The play tells the funny and familiar story of Oscar the slob and Felix the fastidious, both newly-divorced and now living together with disastrous and hilarious results. Playgoers will surely enjoy revisiting this very odd pair, their poker playing buddies and the Pigeon sisters upstairs.
The original hit Broadway production of 1965 starred Walter Matthau and Art Carney, and the movie with Matthau and Jack Lemmon was equally as popular. It soon became a very successful, long running television series with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall in the title roles. The SCP production is just as stellar, packed with some of the community theater’s finest comic talents.
Playing the part of Oscar is veteran SCP comedian Frank Steele. His neatnik roomie is played by Darrah Dunn, who is equally at home in comedy, drama and musical theatre. Two SCP favorites Karen Schuth and Nancy Cassady, will play the giggling Pigeon sisters, and rounding out the cast as the poker players are four experienced SCP talents, Bruce Butler, Johnny Flowers, Jerry Gundersheimer and Mark Beardsley.
Production personnel include Ron Cassady as director, assisted by Joni Friend as stage manager. Webster Crocker is in charge of scenic design and construction, and cast member Schuth is the costumer. Mickie Martin will serve as the production coordinator for the new season.
