The world-renowned Duck Creek Formation is unique to Grayson County. Join geologist Ronette Cornelison on a "walk through time" exploring this and other interesting geological sites in our area. The program will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 8, in the AV/Education Center at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, then participants will be collecting fossils and rocks of the Cretaceous period that have been pushed up by the Preston Anticline. You will find ammonites (ancestors to nautilus), gryphaea (oysters), macrasters (ancestors to sand dollars), shark’s teeth, coprolites (Ronette’s favorite!), and many more. The field trip is open to the public, and will be limited to 20 participants; children must be age 10 or older and accompanied by an adult. There is no charge for the program, however you may order a box lunch when you register. Advance registration is requested; call the Refuge, 903 786 2826. You will need to be in good physical condition, as you will be walking on uneven ground, creek beds, and doing some minor climbing. You will need to provide your own pack to carry your fossils, water and other necessary items. Good walking shoes with good soles are a must.
