BETRAYED J. M. Windle Tyndale House Publishers Helen Jones “This is my Father’s World…” is the refrain being sung over and over by a little blonde-headed girl in the Guatemalan jungle as she plays with her younger sister who is probably fifteen months old, and a little boy about her own age, obviously a native of the country. They have found a treasure trove in the jungle with so many wonderful places to hide and so many different flowers to see. All three children are so intent on their play that the “thunder” they hear in the distance does not bother them at all. Then the baby becomes restless because it is growing dark and she is getting hungry, so the three starts the trek back to the village in the clearing they call home. But when they arrive at their village, they find a sight that strikes such horror to their hearts that the oldest girl picks up her baby sister hugging her as tightly as she can while the boy runs screaming to his dead parents. But the blonde headed girl stands as though mute until a tall white man picks her and her sister up, puts them in a jeep and tells them not to worry, everything will be okay. The “thunder” they heard was gunfire! J. M. Windle begins his story BETRAYED with such force that from the first page you cannot find a convenient time to put the book away. It is the story of Vicki Andrews who is returning to Guatemala on a job assignment for the government agency, “Rescue the Children.” Her sister, Holly, known as a “tree-hugger” because of her vocation in life to preserve the forest and wild animals, meets her at the airport. Even though Vicki found out upon entering college that she was born here, she has no love for the country. All she wants is to complete her job assignment and go back home to Washington D.C. However, she finds her sister who. before dying in her arms, tries to tell her who killed her. You will travel into the deepest jungle of Guatemala with Vicki looking for the person(s) responsible for her sister’s death. You will also find yourself in a terrible quandary as to whom to trust in your journey with her. There are those you will meet and love and those you will meet and dislike. Windle has written a thriller that manages to keep your attention from the beginning to the end of the book. Betrayed is one of the books you will want to keep on your bookshelf because you may find yourself picking it up to reread.
