On Friday evening, February 1st, the Sherman Community Players opened THE FOREIGNER, the third play in the 2007-08 Season. This very funny comedy is the winner of numerous theatrical awards, including Best New American Play. The Players presented the play in 1988, and it was one of the group’s most popular successes. Set in a remote and rustic fishing lodge in rural Georgia, this inventive comic romp is a storehouse of inspired antics, constant surprises and bit of sentiment.
The leading character is the likable wimp Charlie, an English proofreader for a science fiction magazine. Jilted by his wife and left alone at the lodge among a group of very colorful and interesting strangers, the painfully shy Charlie pretends to be a “foreigner” with no knowledge of English, hoping no one will speak to or bother him. Instead, he winds up being everyone’s confidant and privy to more information than he wants, as he learns of darkest secrets, sinister schemes, an untimely pregnancy and other nefarious deeds and skullduggeries! THE FOREIGNER is guaranteed to take audiences on a zany, zig-zag course of uproarious laugher.
The production is a mixture of veteran performers and new faces. Newcomers include Whitesboro eight grade teacher Carrier Bitros and Grayson College student Greg Griffin. SCP regulars include Brian Burton in the title role, Bruce Butler, Travis Lyons, Paul Jordan and Suzan Fincher, who returns to the Finley stage after several years’ absence. Mrs. Fincher is reprising the role she played in SCP’s 1988 production. She is best remembered for her beautiful performances in the title role of SCP’s production of DRIVING MISS DAISY.
THE FOREIGNER plays Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2p.m.through February 17. Performances are held in the Finley Theater at 500 N. Elm. Tickets range in price from $6 to 12. The Box Office telephone number is 903-89208818, and reservations are encouraged. Call soon for reservations as tickets are selling out and you don’t want to miss this delightfully entertaining play.
