Rick Cantu, March Photographer of Month
Article
Rick Cantu has been named “Photographer of the Month” for March, 2008, by the Friends of Hagerman. An album of his photos, all taken at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, is posted on the Friends website, www.friendsofhagerman.com. Rick Cantu has been with the Fish & Wildlife Service for about 16 years and has worked in four states and three different regions. Now assistant manager at Hagerman, Mr. Cantu states “During that time I have seen some truly amazing things. In the last several years, I have started trying to show visitors some of the spectacular sights that are all around us instead of just telling them about the amazing world we live in. I purchased my first personal digital camera last fall and the majority of the photos that will be displayed on the Friends website were taken on the Refuge within the last six months. My photo interests center around nature photography where subjects can range in size from tiny mushrooms and flowers to more familiar and larger sights such as dragonflies, butterflies, birds and mammals.” Mr. Cantu’s photo of the two whooping cranes that visited Hagerman in December was chosen for the cover of the Fish & Wildlife Service Southwest Region Calendar. His photos appear regularly in the Featherless Flyer, newsletter for the Friends of Hagerman. For more information about programs and activities of the Friends, visit the website or call the Refuge, 903 786 2826. Photographers with pictures taken at the Refuge are invited to contact Sue Malnory regarding selection for the website, by email to friendsofhagerman.com.
