Friends of Hagerman Name Photographer of Month for April
Article
Johnny Beall has been named Photographer of the Month for April, by the Friends of Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. A collection of his photos, all taken at the Refuge, can be seen on the Friends’ website, www.friendsofhagerman.com. during this month. Beall started taking pictures with a range finder camera and handheld light meter in the 1960’s and soon moved up to a single lens reflex camera with various lenses. About six years ago he moved to digital photography. He likes nature, landscape, and macro photography. And of course, he also likes taking pictures of his new grandson, Logan. Beall has been the Refuge Manager of the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge for seven years. In his thirty-five year career, he has managed the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, Buffalo Lake NWR Complex in the Texas Panhandle, Oahu NWR complex in Hawaii, and Tishomingo NWR in Oklahoma. Now he is looking forward to retirement in May, 2008. Beall offers this tip for photographers – “although being in the right place at the right time has its advantages, the difference between an amateur photographer and a professional photographer is the number of photos they take. The professional photographer knows that when a photo opportunity presents itself, take lots of pictures with different camera settings and different angles if possible because that opportunity may never come again. The odds are you’re bound to get one or two very good photos out of a large number of shots.” For more information about the Friends of Hagerman NWR, visit the website or call the Refuge, 903 786 2826.
