On Monday and Tuesday evenings, April 28 and 29, the Sherman Community Players will be holding auditions for the summer musical THE MUSIC MAN. This all-American musical celebrates the bygone era of Smalltown, USA. Fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill cons the people of River City into buying instruments and uniforms for a boy’s band he vows to organize despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. Colorful comic characters, rousing marches, a barbershop quartet and beautiful ballads make this show a perfect way to end the Players’ 2007-08 Season.
Director Ron Cassady says “this is an ideal community theatre show. It has parts for children ages 8 to 12, teenagers and adults of all ages. In addition to the barbershop quartet and Harold Hill, there is his sidekick Marcellus, Marion, a spinster librarian, a love-struck teenage couple whose romance is thwarted by the comical mayor, the mayor’s artsy wife, and many, many more.
Popular songs include Seventy-Six Trombones, “Til There Was You, Ya Got Trouble and Pick-a-Little and Lida Rose. Musical director for the show is Scottie Johnson who will also be conducting a full orchestra, and Amy Dean will be the choreographer.
Auditions will be held in the Finley Theatre at 500 N. Elm. Auditions for children ages 8 to 12 year old will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Auditions for teenagers and adults will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. All auditioners are required to sing any song of their choice. A pianist will be provided if needed, and a cassette/CD player will be available for recorded accompaniments.
