Time is a precious commodity but 16 Texoma agencies are hoping you will give them some of your time by volunteering . “Many people want to give back to their community and they cannot donate money, but they can give of their time,” said Vicky Penn of North Texas Youth Connection. Penn’s agency is one of many that will participate in the Volunteer Connection Fair on Saturday, November 15, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Midway Mall in Sherman, Texas. “There are opportunities for everyone, “ continued Penn, “including men, youth, adults and senior citizens.” The fair allows you to visit with several agencies to learn about how you can help, training, and the time commitment involved. Sasha Best, Executive Director of the Children’s Museum, said they rely on youth volunteers to help with birthday parties and special events. Other agencies who need young people are MHMR and North Texas Youth Connection. If emergencies or disasters excite you, representatives from Preston Volunteer Emergency Services, The American Red Cross and 2-1-1 Texas will be on-hand to visit with you. The Sherman Preservation League has one-time projects for all age groups such as the Annual Spring Tour of Homes and reviving their rose garden. Docents are also needed for the C.S. Roberts House Museum, ideal for adults with a love for history. Are you a senior citizen needing some extra cash? Sign-up as a school mentor with the Foster Granparent Program. Have you ever wondered how you volunteer for a hopital, the neigborhood clinic or an assisted living facility? Then the staffs of Wilson N. Jones, MHMR, Grayson County Health Department, and Stonebrook/Pecan Point Assisted Living will be happy to answer all of you questions and sign you up! Other agencies that will have a booth at the fair are: Bonham Chamber of Commerce, Hanna’s Horseshoes of Hope, Girls, Inc., Sherman Evening Lions Club, and CASA. For more information about the Volunteer Connection Fair or to contact any of these agencies directly please call Judy Fullylove at 903-813-3549, weekdays 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
