SCP OPENS “THE WALTONS’ HOMECOMING” On Friday evening, December 5, the Sherman Community Players will open their holiday production of THE WALTONS’ HOMECOMING. Based on the award-winning television series, this family show will make a great holiday entertainment. The story centers around the Walton family in rural Virginia during the Great Depression as seen through the eyes of John-Boy, the eldest son and an aspiring novelist, played by 16 year old Derek George. The time is Christmas and the family is struggling hard just to survive. With no money for presents, their father takes the only available job he can find, many miles from home. The rest of the family eagerly awaits his return on a snowy Christmas Eve, but he’s long over due with everyone’s presents, and everyone is worried about him. Despair turns to joy in the finale of this heartfelt tale of love and family. Director Ron Cassady says the play is especially meaningful during these troubling and unsettling economic times. It portrays a close-knit family trying to make the best out of “hard times”, as they overcome obstacles with humor, love and spirit. The large cast of 22 area actors range in age from 8 to 68 as they bring to life all of the familiar characters from the beloved television series including John Boy and his six siblings, Grandpa and Grandma Walton and the spinster Baldwin sisters who make a living selling their “Papa’s Recipe” which is really moonshine whiskey. THE WALTONS’ HOMECOMING will open Dec. 5 and run through Dec. 21 with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. Tickets are priced from $7 to $14. There will also be a special preview performance on Thursday Dec. 4 with all seats priced at $5. The box office telephone number is 903-892-8818. Performances are held in the Finley Theatre at 500 N. Elm, and the box office is located in the Honey McGee Playhouse, directly behind the Finley Theatre.
