On Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 7 pm, CORE (Citizens Organizing for Resources & Environment) will host another "Films & Forums" gathering in the Elizabeth May Room of the American Bank of Texas, 120 W. Sam Rayburn Dr., Bonham, TX. All are welcome to attend, and there is no charge for this event. The film is THE FUTURE OF FOOD, produced by Morgan Spurlock who also produced the Academy Award-winning "Supersize Me!" THE FUTURE OF FOOD has been called a "must-see documentary", which is "learned and persuasive". A brief summation of the film is as follows: "There is a revolution happening in the farm fields and on the dinner table of America, a revolution that is transforming the very nature of the food we eat. THE FUTURE OF FOOD offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically-engineered foods that have quietly filled grocery store shelves for the past decade. THE FUTURE OF FOOD examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world's food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today." A segment of the film is devoted to CSAs (Community-Supported Agriculture systems)-- "A relationship of mutual support and commitment between local farmers and community members who pay the farmer an annual membership fee to cover the production costs of the farm. In turn, members receive a weekly share of the harvest during the local growing season." To learn more about this film, go to www.thefutureoffood.com. Following the film, a discussion of your observations, feelings, reflections, opinions and ideas for our community's approach to today's food solutions will be facilitated by Gene Marshall. Those interested in participating or simply listening are encouraged to remain for this portion of the evening. Other business to be addressed at the gathering is the Election of 2011 Officers. CORE offer our gratitude to now Past-President, Nathan Melson, who has had to resign due to family obligations. And we give a big welcome to our President-Elect, Chris Voss, who will be presiding over the meeting on November 6th. Chris was a very active member of CORE at its inception, then moved away for a time. At the onset of the meeting, Chris will make a brief presentation about the proposed Transcanada Tar Sands Pipeline/Keystone Project, whose route will affect landowners in the Northeastern part of Fannin County. Parts of this pipeline have been completed in North and South Dakota with some dire implications. Now, landowners in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas are organizing to oppose the project.
