Wintering Waterfowl Topic at Hagerman NWR December 11
Article
The thousands of geese at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge will be the focus of Second Saturday at the Refuge on December 11. Those attending this free nature program will get an opportunity to view and identify the geese, ducks and gulls, aided by Dr. Wayne Meyer, Associate Professor of Biology at Austin College and Rick Cantu, Assistant Manager at the Refuge. Meyer and Cantu will give a talk on the waterfowl species that can be seen and will then conduct guided tours aboard a TAPS bus to see the waterfowl along Wildlife Drive. The program will begin at 10 a.m., in the Audio Visual Classroom at Hagerman. Binoculars are available on a free loan basis, also. Cantu has been with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 17 years, at National Wildlife Refuges in Missouri, South Dakota and Kansas. He received a B.S. in Range and Wildlife Management from Texas A&M - Kingsville, and his work now centers on managing and protecting uplands and wetlands, along with their inhabitants. Dr. Meyer joined the Austin College faculty in 1993. He earned a Ph.D. at the University of California, Davis, and taught field biology courses at Sierra College and Ornithology with Dr. Peter Marler at the University of California, Davis. In 2011 Dr. Meyer will present a program at the Refuge related to his research on the painted bunting. Second Saturday nature programs are sponsored by the Friends of Hagerman NWR, and are held on the second Saturday of each month, at the Refuge, which is located at 6465 Refuge Road in Sherman. The programs are open to the public. For more information on this and upcoming programs, visit the website, www.friendsofhagerman.com or call the Refuge, 903-786-2826.
