Volunteer Fire Departments cross city, county, state and even country boundaries to help where special equipment and additional firefighters are needed – and this year they are working overtime in addition to regular jobs.
All over Texas in small towns and cities are Volunteer Fire Departments and here in Whitewright we have had one in place for over 100 years!
Brave men and women volunteer to be available at anytime, to support their community through their local VFD. From going out on medical calls and auto accidents to fighting fires, these volunteers give their time and risk their safety freely, for their community. In the middle of dinner, watching the ballgame, while spending time with their family or while asleep, these volunteers allow interruptions to ensure that emergencies are addressed promptly.
To support North Texas volunteer fire departments the Whitewright Area Chamber of Commerce started a Firefighter Chili Cook-off last year to raise much-needed funds for participating departments. This year it takes place on Saturday, November 5th from 8:00 a.m.to 2:00 p.m. during the Grand Street Fall Festival, which runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All funds raised – from raffles, entry fees, sponsors, auction, tee shirt sales, chili sampler sales - will allow departments to purchase what they need to save lives and property. This is our second year and we are very excited to now be teamed up with CASI, the Chili Appreciation Society International. We will follow their rules and are inviting individuals, teams, and volunteer fire departments throughout North Texas to come and cook-up some wonderful chili. Folks will also have a chance to pay only $5 to taste the entrants’ chili.
This is all part of our 9th annual Grand Street Fall Festival in Historic Downtown Whitewright; admission is free. Come out and share your chili-cooking skills with the world, register today! For more information visit us online at www.grandstreetfallfestival.com or call (903) 818-9023. A very tasty way to support those who support us and besides - everybody loves firefighters and chili!
