SHERMAN, TEXAS—The Austin College Concert Band is seeking qualified musicians to audition for performance, with openings in most sections. The Concert Band director, Robert Archer, Austin College adjunct instructor in music, explained that the group is a full concert band, doubling many parts. Archer said the large ensemble is dedicated to reading and performing traditional and contemporary band literature.
The band will meet for its first rehearsal of the fall from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5, in Craig Hall Room 114 on the Austin College campus, and will continue each Wednesday, 7 to 9 p.m., in Craig Hall. The band will be reading and working on music of Dr. W. Francis McBeth, described by Archer as one of the most renowned composers of wind band literature of the past century. He died in January 2012. The band’s fall concert is scheduled for Wednesday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Wynne Chapel.
Now in its 10th season, the Concert Band is a joint effort of Austin College and community musicians. Band members include Austin College students—music majors and non-music majors, Austin College faculty, area high school band directors, and community members. The band is open to those who have an instrumental background and wish to continue or renew their love of music, Archer said.
Individuals seeking information about the ensemble or wishing to participate should contact Archer at barcher@austincollege.edu or call the Department of Music at 903.813.2251.
