Freshmen at Austin College gained an early perspective on the College’s emphasis on volunteer service during New Student Conference Sunday afternoon with “First We Serve.” The new students gathered in Sid Richardson Center of Mason Complex with the goal of packaging 10,000 meals in one hour for the non-profit organization Send Hope, which will transport the meals to needy individuals in Honduras. An assembly line production resulted in surpassing that goal, completing 16,000 meals that include rice, soy, dried vegetables, and vitamin and mineral powders. Each bag provides six meals. "We want to help these students understand that they are gifted students, and what gifted students do is act gifted and act in ways that are good for other people,” said College chaplain John Williams, adding that it was not a required activity, but one in which students were invited and encouraged to participate.
