Constitution Week is the commemoration of America’s most important document. It is celebrated annually during the week of September 17-23. This celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. DAR has also erected a structure that is built in tribute to the Constitution of the United States, DAR Constitution Hall, which is a performing arts center, opened in 1929. The City of Pottsboro provided a proclamation for this very special week as we remember and honor the U.S. Constitution.
Preston Trail daughters also participated in a public reading of the U.S. Constitution on September 17th at the Denton Courthouse along with daughters from the Benjamin Lyon Chapter and members of the public.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for our nation's children. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership. With more than 175,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the worlds largest and most active service organizations. It also publishes the award winning American Spirit magazine. To learn more about the work of today's DAR, visit www.DAR.org.
