Article
Local WWII U.S. Army veteran, Dillard D. Graham of Sherman is the first recipient of financial assistance from Opening Doors for Disabled Veterans. Opening Doors is an assistance program offered by Preston Trail NSDAR to all disabled veterans in Grayson County. The program is designed to assist veterans with widening interior doorways to an accessible width of 36” allowing for a wheelchair or walker. Also included in the program parameters are installing walk in showers, hand grips, and accessible toilets where needed. Mr. Graham is a native of Bonham. After serving in the U.S. Army during WWII and receiving the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, he returned home and accepted a position in Dallas. After retirement he and his wife returned to Sherman. Work was recently completed on his bathroom including an accessible toilet, a walk in shower and hand grips. Applications for assistance can be found at the VFW #2772 in Sherman, Commander Ray Flood and at the Grayson County Veteran Services Office, Jimmy Petty. Or you may request an application from Preston Trail NSDAR at lisalettie@yahoo.com. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution serves veterans across the globe. For more than a century, the members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution have dedicated themselves to historical preservation, promotion of education, and encouragement of patriotic endeavor. These goals are as relevant in today's society as they were when the organization was founded in 1890. DAR Members’ love of country is evident in the multitude of patriotic endeavors they pursue, including: Providing more than 200,000 hours of volunteer time annually to veterans in Veterans Administration hospitals and non-VA facilities and offering support to America’s service personnel in current conflicts abroad through care packages, phone cards and other needed items. Preston Trail Chapter DAR meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month (Sept – May) Ladies interested in learning about the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution are invited to all Preston Trail meetings. Any woman, 18 years or older, is invited to consider membership in the society. Trained genealogist volunteers are available at no charge to assist in the lineage research needed for membership. Proof must be found and documented that the woman has someone in her lineage who either fought in or gave support to the American Revolution.
