Austin College Hosts Carl Antonowicz’s Art Exhibit, “Spotblacks on the Soul”
Article
SHERMAN, TEXAS—The Austin College Department of Art and Art History is hosting the drawing exhibition “Spotblack on the Soul” by Carl Antonowicz October 13 through November 21 in Ida Green Gallery of Ida Green Communication Center. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 903.813.2048. In his statement about the exhibit, Antonowicz wrote: “Comics, for me, have become a way of tackling ideas of which I don't have a complete understanding. My undergraduate work here at Austin College was primarily focused on understanding paranoia, loss, and Jean Beaudrillard; since then, I've focused (mostly) on relationships, work, academia, disease, money, and giant monsters. I'm not sure if telling these stories has helped me understand anything better, but it has given me a sense of purpose--and a reason to seek out unfamiliar ideas. Drawing comics is probably the most sedentary form of exploration short of transcendental meditation. The pieces you see on the walls of this gallery are maps of those explorations, the books on the table detailed travel narratives of my time on the trail through these ideas. They're pages from at least five different projects I've worked on in the past six years. Some of it comes from my time at the Center for Cartoon Studies up in Vermont, but most of it comes from post-graduate work. Please, stay a while. Take a few minutes to look over the originals, then pull up a chair and read if you have the time. I hope you enjoy.” Austin College, a private national liberal arts college located north of Dallas in Sherman, Texas, has earned a reputation for excellence in academic preparation, international study, pre-professional foundations, leadership development, committed faculty, and hands-on, adventurous learning opportunities. One of 40 schools profiled in Loren Pope’s influential book Colleges That Change Lives, Austin College boasts a welcoming community that embraces diversity and individuality, with more than 36 percent of students representing ethnic minorities. A residential student body of 1,250 students and a faculty of more than 100 allow a 12:1 student-faculty ratio and personalized attention. The College is related by covenant to the Presbyterian Church (USA) and cultivates an inclusive atmosphere that supports students’ faith journeys regardless of religious tradition. Founded in 1849, the College is the oldest institution of higher education in Texas operating under original name and charter.
