Preston Trail NSDAR November Meeting
Article
The Preston Trail Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) will meet at 6pm November 20th at Georgetown Baptist Church, Office Suite in Pottsboro. Regent Lisa Lettie will conduct the session. Dinner begins at 5:00pm with a cost of $10. Guest speaker will be Charles Holcomb, President of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 973 in Sherman. Founded in 1978, Vietnam Veterans of America is the only national Vietnam veterans’ organization congressional chartered and exclusively dedicated to Vietnam-era veterans and their families. VVA is organized as a not-for-profit corporation and is tax-exempt under Section 501(c) (19) of the Internal Revenue Service Code. Guide Star Report VVA’s goals are to promote and support the full range of issues important to Vietnam veterans, to create a new identity for this generation of veterans, and to change public perception of Vietnam veterans. VVA’s founding principle: “Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another.” Local Chapter 973 is dedicated to making sure that never happens again. Sometimes a combat veteran needs to readjust from the war zone back to civilian life. We have several Chapter 973 members trained to help the transition. We also pair trained service dogs with severely PTSD injured veterans in Cooke, Fannin, and Grayson Counties, Texas. A trained service dog can help a veteran 24 hours a day. Preston Trail NSDAR is a partner with the U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. Objectives include thanking and honoring veterans of the Vietnam War including those who were held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action, to highlight eh service of the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War, to pay tribute to the contributions made on the home front, and to recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by the allies of the US during the Vietnam War. For more information, go to www.vietnamwar50th.com Following the program, a business meeting will be held to discuss chapter affairs. Daughters will be collecting items and signing Christmas cards for veterans at the Bonham VA Hospital. Donations will also be sent to our adopted soldier SPC Steven Jones and his platoon serving in Afghanistan. Women ages 18 and older who are interested in learning about NSDAR are encourage to attend. Membership is open to any woman who can trace her lineage back to a family member who either fought in or gave aid to the American Revolution. Trained genealogist volunteers are available, free of charge, to assist in lineage research . For more information, call Lisa Lettie at 817-360-6830.
