SHERMAN, TEXAS—Weather is causing havoc in planning for Austin College’s 2015 Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 17, but nothing will lessen the accomplishment for graduates as President Marjorie Hass presents their diplomas. The ceremonies will include 20 students completing Master of Arts in Teaching degrees through the Austin Teacher Program as well as some 280 Bachelor of Arts degree candidates. The ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m.
The Honorable Wallace Jefferson, former chief justice of the Supreme Court of Texas, will present the Commencement address. He will receive an honorary doctoral degree during the ceremony, as will the Reverend Patrick McCoy, senior pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church of McKinney and Baccalaureate speaker at the Saturday evening service; Catherine “Kiki” Ann (Moore) McLean, a Class of 1985 graduate who has made her mark as one of the top public affairs strategists in the country; and longtime Austin College faculty and campus legends Dr. Kenneth W. Street and Dr. Clyde L. Hall.
Senior Taylor Crouch of Round Rock, Texas, an international relations major with minors in leadership studies and anthropology, will speak on behalf of his fellow graduates.
Dr. Sheila Amin Gutiérrez de Piñeres, vice president for Academic Affairs and dean of the faculty, will read the names of graduates as they cross the stage to receive their diploma from President Hass and receive their academic hoods from faculty.
Dr. David Baker serves as faculty marshal and leads the procession of students, faculty, trustees, and special guests across campus to their seats on the lawn and stage.
Members of the Class of 1965 are on campus for the 50th year reunion and will receive anniversary diplomas and medallions as they are inducted into the College’s Golden ’Roo Society Friday evening. Alumni representing classes previously inducted into the 50-year society also will attend.
