Refuge Visitor Center to Re-Open
Article
Hagerman Wildlife Refuge has been closed to the public since May 24. After months of rain and flooding, the long anticipated re-opening of the Visitor Center at 6465 Refuge Road, Sherman, TX will take place on July 31. At this time visitors can only access the Visitor Center from Highway 289 via Refuge Road. All of the activities for August will be held at the Visitor Center. Due to the continued flooding of the Refuge, all roads and hiking trails within the confines of the Refuge are closed. The Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is also closed to all powerboats due to the fully and partially submerged oil pump jacks and large floating debris. Please contact the Refuge at 903-786-2826 for questions related to these closures. Senior and Access National Park Passes will once again be available for sale at the Visitor Center beginning July 31 or on any non-holiday weekday after August 3. Passes are available from 9 am-4 pm Monday-Friday. Youth First “The Clean Green Algae Machine” will get children thinking about algae and all the ways we use them every day. The free nature program for children ages 4-12 will be held at the Hagerman Visitor Center on Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 10:00 to 11:30 am. Parents or another responsible adult will need to accompany children age 4-7. Children should be pre-registered and each child should be registered separately. You can now register online as a member or a guest, or if you prefer, just call the Refuge, 903-786-2826. Registration for this event closes on Thursday, July 30 at 4 pm. You will not be able to register after that. Please do not leave messages after hours on the Thursday or Friday before the event. If you register and then learn you will not be attending, please let the staff know by calling the Refuge or emailing them through the Contact Page http://www.friendsofhagerman.com/RefugeWildlife. Second Saturday Ever wonder about all those wading birds you see at Hagerman? The program will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2015 from 10:00-11:30 am in the Hagerman Visitor Center. The program will be conducted by Dr. Wayne Meyer, Associate Professor of Biology at Austin College. This series of free nature programs meet the second Saturday of each month. No reservations are required and they are open to the public. Butterfly Garden Walk Come visit our beautiful new Butterfly Garden located opposite the Hagerman Visitor Center.
