Book (r)Eview:
JESUS WEPT
By Bruce Marchiano
Howard Press
The problem of pain - it is the source of countless arguments and endless railing against God. We've all heard the question, and most of us have asked it. If there is a God, why did he let this happen? Why didn't he do something to prevent it? Why is there war, famine, sickness, suffering? Doesn't he care? Perhaps we even get a little more personal in our demands for an answer. Why didn't You do something about it?!
The answer, according to author Bruce Marchiano, is Jesus wept. More than just the shortest verse in the Bible and the title to Marchiano's latest book, it is a statement about the divine nature of God.
In a remarkably compact treatise on the human condition, Marchiano declares the loving humanity of Christ. He is not a god of wood or stone, dumb and blind to our infirmities. But he appeared in flesh and was subject to the same trials and tribulations that beset us. Jesus wept. He wept at the graveside of his friend, Lazarus. He wept when terrorists slammed jumbo jets into the side of the World Trade Center. He still weeps with every blind, hungry, neglected child who sleeps in the street.
And He did something about it - on the cross. "He's walked through loss. He's tasted hard times. He's experienced pain," Marchiano writes. "But…the living God longs to reach into whatever pain or loss is in your life and do what only he can do: resurrect and redeem."
"Jesus Wept" is a compassionate, compelling, and comforting look at a God who is moved to tears by our need.
