Old Saybrook, CT - August 31, 2004 - The company picnic remains an institution in most workplaces, but cost and lack of interest will leave other workers staring out their windows this summer, according to an online poll of human resources professionals conducted by HR.BLR.com. HR.BLR.com. asked HR pros, "Is your company hosting an outing for employees this summer?" They answered as follows: 55% said "Yes;" 20% replied "No, because of the expense;" 16% indicated they'll hold a function at another point in the year; 9% said "No, because there's no interest." The poll, conducted the week of Aug. 16, drew 473 votes. Legal editors at Business and Legal Reports, Inc., which operates HR.BLR.com, warn employers to keep liability in mind when hosting any function, particularly if alcohol is served. In many states, injuries that occur as a result of intoxication can mean liability for whoever served the alcohol. In addition, an employee injured during an office social event might not be covered by workers' compensation, depending on the state.
