Great Days of Service are Here Again!!
Article
Since 1996, the Sherman Community has gathered the last week of June to help others. This year was no exception. Organized through the cooperation of several Sherman churches, the Great Days of Service (GDS) kick off began yesterday, Wednesday June 26th at a breakfast at First United Methodist Church. With nearly one thousand community members helping those less fortunate this year, the projects do not seem as daunting. The traditional volunteer projects such as a food drive, housing clean ups, and nursing home visitations, will be joined with new services such as a children's camp and a serve the city project in which people will help in areas of the city which are in dire need of cleaning up. During this time the Service Academy for Youth (SAY) camp is held in conjunction with Great Days of Service. Children of various ages come together to volunteer during the day, and spend some time together just hanging out at night. The churches that chose to participate in this year's GDS are First United Methodist Church of Sherman, Covenant Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church of Sherman, Greater New Hope Church, Harvest Time Assembly of God, Progressive Baptist Church, and St. Stephens Episcopal Church. GDS runs from Wednesday, June 26 to Saturday, June 29. If you are interested in participating in this community effort, please contact Nancy Russell at (903) 893-6514, or any of the participating churches.
